Getting
Around
Car Rental: A St. Croix car rental will give you the flexibility
and mobility to tour the island at your own pace. Most visitors
staying at St. Croix villas have few other options - bus service,
though present, is unreliable at the best of times and taking a
taxi everywhere can be inconvenient. Securing a St. Croix car rental,
then, is your best bet if you plan on leaving your accommodations
to tour, shop, or eat. The bulk of St. Croix' car rental agencies
are located at the island's airport, with some operating branches
in Christiansted as well. Major renters as well as local outfitters
are available, with most offering a range of small to mid-size vehicles
with air-conditioning. Reserving a St. Croix car rental will require
a valid driver's license from any country - good for 90 days on
the USVI - and a credit card. Most St. Croix car rental companies
won't rent to anyone under the age of 25. St. Croix car rental rates
are moderate, but expect to pay more than average for accident insurance.
Parking can be limited in Christiansted. Most major roads are well-
maintained asphalt. Please remember to obey all speed limits, wear
your seat belt, and drive on the left!
Taxi: Taxis are abundant on St. Croix. In Christiansted,
taxi stands are located near the Government House on King Street,
and on Market Square. Frederiksted's taxi stand is next to Fort
Frederik.
Bus: Buses run regularly between Christiansted and Frederiksted
from 5:30am to 9:30pm except Sunday. Service is also available from
both cities to and from the airport. Exact change is required. For
more information, call the VITRAN office at 773-1290, ext. 2291.
Limo: Limousines can be rented through the V.I. Limousine
Service at 778-LIMO (5466).
Ferry: Seasonal ferry service (November - May) is offered
between St. Thomas and St. Croix via V.I. Fast Ferry (75 minute
trip).
