Getting Around

Ferries: Passenger ferries from St. Thomas to St. John depart from Red Hook (on the east side of St. Thomas) and Charlotte Amalie. Schedules are as follows:

  • Red Hook to Cruz Bay, St. John: 6:30 am and 7:30 am, then each hour 8 am to midnight
  • Cruz Bay to Red Hook, St. Thomas: Each hour, 6 am to 11 pm
  • Charlotte Amalie to Cruz Bay, St. John: 9 am, 11 am, 1 pm, 3 pm, 4:00 pm, 5:30 pm
  • Cruz Bay to Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas: 7:15 am, 9:15 am, 11:15 am, 1:15 pm, 2:15 pm, 3:45 pm

Ferries to and from Red Hook and Cruz Bay take between 15 and 20 minutes; ferries to and from Charlotte Amalie and Cruz Bay take approximately 45 minutes. Frequent car ferries are also available between Red Hook and Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas to Cruz Bay, St. John. Visitors may also travel to Puerto Rico and the British Virgin Islands from St. John by ferry.

Taxi: Taxis are available on St. John. Visitors can take a two-hour tour of the island by taxi for a set fee. For more information, call the Taxi Commission at 776-8294 for questions.

Bus: Buses run from Cruz Bay on the west side of the island every hour on the half hour to Coral Bay on the east side of the island. Fares are one dollar each way.

Car Rental: Automobile rentals are available in Cruz Bay. Please remember to obey all speed limits, wear your seat belt, and drive on the left!.
